No Surprises: Rollicking Adventure and Romance

In The Artist's Way book, a workbook aimed at helping you (re-)discover your creativity, one of the exercises asks you to list your favourite movies.

The logic is that, often, there is a (fairly obvious) theme to the kinds of movies and stories that we like, but that we are sometimes not aware of.

I'm a skilled procrastinator, so I've been reworking my list in my head for, well, long enough.

Time at last to put pen to paper, err, words on screen.

I'm not a huge movie watcher these days partly because I always feel as though I should be doing something creative rather than just watching the fruits of someone else's creative endeavour. Plus, books are usually my preferred form of fiction. (It's a good thing the movie industry isn't reliant on the likes of me!)

I've based my big list below on everything - how the movie speaks to me, how it stays with me after, re-watch-ability, sheer joy and pleasure of the movie journey, the quotable quotes... Everything.

In alphabetical order:
  • Amélie
  • Bedazzled
  • The Bourne Identity
  • Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
  • Décalage Horaire (Jetlag)
  • Galaxy Quest
  • Lady Canton and Mr Rose
  • Last of the Mohicans
  • Molière
  • The Mummy I
  • The Mummy II
  • Mystery Men
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Ronin
  • Suddenly 30
  • While You were Sleeping
  • Wimbledon

If I had to select a top 5, it might be:
  1. 1. Amélie
  2. 2. The Mummy I
  3. 3. Molière
  4. 4. Last of the Mohicans
  5. 5. Pirates of the Caribbean

Hmm. That wasn't too difficult to do, actually. And I'm pretty happy with that list - for now.

So what does it say about me? The very obvious, I suppose... That I like rollicking adventure, humour and romance :-)

The Sun and the Moon

The following little story came to me while driving home one night on a dark road lit up in silver by a half-moon.  I suddenly had a fanciful little image of a car smilingly gobbling up a crescent-shaped sliver of moon-flake which helped its headlights shine brighter.  Such an image wouldn't normally find a home outside my head, but

Making Mauritius-Style Banana Cakes (Gateaux Bananes)

I mis-managed my bananas. I got my timing all wrong and they were suddenly too ripe and too spotted and dotted to eat, and were sitting there looking at me with accusatory and reproachful looks. Banana cake was the obvious solution. But why go the way of regular banana cake, when there's the distant call of Mauritius-style gateaux bananes (you guessed it: banana cakes).

I saw a UFO

In September 2024, while I was on the west coast of Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean, I saw an unidentified flying object (UFO). My LittleOne and I were on a rooftop balcony. We were staring idly above the tops of the trees to the west, where there was still the faintest leftover pineapple glow in the sky. Then, we shifted our gaze slightly to the same tops of the trees, but in the south-west, where the sky had already darkened to a soft, purpley-crimson.  There were three stars in the sky. One of the stars, just above the tree line was smudged. As though it had a faint mist around it. The other two stars, by contrast, were perfectly clear. In the above photo ( not taken on the UFO evening), if you look closely, you can see two stars. The third, smudged star was to the left of these two stars. I pointed out the smudgy star to LittleOne and wondered out loud 'why was it smudged?' There were no clouds in the sky. As we stared at it, we realised the smudgy star was actuall...
