My Best FridayPhrases Pieces of 2014

In 2014, Twitter came alive for me when I discovered word prompt games to inspire fiction, micro-fiction, micro-poetry, fun, and Twitter communities of like-minded creatives. (I wrote about this earlier this year). Now, as 2014 comes to an end, I wanted to collect all my best pieces in one place, starting with my favourite compositions for FridayPhrases (known on Twitter by its short-hand hash-tag, #FP).

The Badlands Beyond

This piece was put together in response to a writing dare by @StoryBandit on Twitter, whose exact words were: "We dare you to write a 149-word poem using the following words: mimosa, contiguous, ladle hanks, #writingdare" The dares don't say anything about using the words in the exact given order (thank goodness!) :-)

The Lava Fields

This lil piece of flash fiction is my first attempt at taking on a writing dare offered by @StoryBandit on Twitter:

The Wonderful World of Friday Phrases

In a corner of the Twitterverse, there is a wondrous galaxy called Friday Phrases.  I stumbled onto it in the first half of 2014 and became quickly smitten. You see, Friday Phrases is all about micro-fiction - creating, doing, playing and celebrating it.

Wen and Wy Join the Farm

The sun rose, promising another warm day for the animals of Ebony-Dodo Farm. "Good morning all!" Rico the Rooster sang out cheerfully. "Ready to tackle the day??" "Good morning, Rico," said Dood the cow politely doing some deep knee-bends, swishing out her tail around and twirling her neck from side to side.  Yippee and Youppee, the two oxen, were surly as they always in the morning and grunted responses which were lost behind their snaffles of their breakfast hay.  OlĂ© the Goat danced around on the hard earth, and threw in a couple of twirling dance moves. "I am ready!!" She announced, letting her rear legs do a separate dance to her front ones

The Sun and the Moon

The following little story came to me while driving home one night on a dark road lit up in silver by a half-moon.  I suddenly had a fanciful little image of a car smilingly gobbling up a crescent-shaped sliver of moon-flake which helped its headlights shine brighter.  Such an image wouldn't normally find a home outside my head, but

No Surprises: Rollicking Adventure and Romance

In The Artist's Way book, a workbook aimed at helping you (re-)discover your creativity, one of the exercises asks you to list your favourite movies. The logic is that, often, there is a (fairly obvious) theme to the kinds of movies and stories that we like, but that we are sometimes not aware of.  I'm a skilled procrastinator, so I've been reworking my list in my head for, well, long enough.

Valley of the Waters: Summer Bushwalk

As I write this in April 2014, we are barreling through autumn here in the Blue Mountains in Australia. It actually feels as though autumn has been eagerly hanging around, trying to stake a claim on our corner of the world since mid-February. I find myself already pining for what feels like a very brief summer. And I harken back to one of the stand-out days of the summer: the day we did the Valley of the Waters bushwalk.

A Love of Lychees

Lychees are my favourite-est fruit in the whole world. So imagine my joyous jubilations and delights when
